June is National Indigenous History Month, and a fitting time to launch our second annual Indigenous Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s curated list spans several genres, giving participants a chance to connect more deeply with Indigenous authors and voices. Each month features two books — one non-fiction, one fiction.
Books for July:
- Crow Winter by Karen McBride
- The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Books for August:
- A Mind Spread Out on the Ground by Alicia Elliot
- There There by Tommy Orange
How to Participate:
Participants are encouraged to read, reflect, and share their thoughts with the parish community. As with last year, a display at St. Timothy’s will let readers post their reflections, with discussion questions provided for guidance. Those out of town can share their thoughts by emailing the office at office@sttimothy.ca to be featured in What’s Happening.
Getting the Books:
The reading challenge is open to all! Copies of each book are available in multiple formats through the Toronto Public Library and are available for purchase at bookstores. 1 copy of each book is also available in the parish library for those who wish to borrow. A list of books for younger readers will also be shared for any of our younger parishioners who would also like to participate.
We hope that this reading challenge serves as one of many steps that we, as a parish community, can take on the pathway towards Indigenous reconciliation.
